Motorist doing 99mph tells Ballymena Court he was ‘responding to report that elderly relative had fallen’

Ballymena Court

A MAN caught doing 99mph in a 60mph zone at the Craigs Road near Rasharkin at 8pm on July 1 last year said he was responding to a phone call that a relative aged in his 80s had fallen.

Morris Rutherford (54), of Carclinty Road near Cullybackey, pleaded guilty to speeding when he appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

He said he was “really sorry” for speeding.

District Judge Nigel Broderick told him speeding was a major cause of accidents.

He said he appreciated the defendant thought he had a “good reason” for travelling so fast “but that would be cold comfort if you had hit anyone at 99mph”.
