Mum’s Nissan Juke ‘written off’ following careless driving by her son

Ballymena Court

A MAN who took his mother’s Nissan Juke without permission crashed into the rear of a van causing his mum’s vehicle to be written off at a cost of several thousand pounds.

Jake McClafferty (24), with an address at Kilnadore Road, Cushendall, admitted a number of charges arising out of the incident including driving without due care and attention at the Clogher Road and Cushendall Road near Ballymena.

He also pleaded guilty to the aggravated taking and causing damage to a Nissan Juke; absence of insurance and a driving licence offence.

The charges relate to December 2 last year.

Ballymena Magistrates Court on January 9 heard a van was intending to turn right when struck from behind by the defendant.

Defence solicitor Ciaran Shiels said the defendant is due to commence work as a plasterer in London and he has already started to pay for damage caused in the accident.

The court was told the defendant wished to apologise.

The defendant was banned from driving for three months; fined £300 and given a one year conditional discharge.
