POLICE saw a man smoking a “joint” in the Memorial Park across from Ballymena Police Station, the town’s Magistrates Court heard.
Two males were at a seated area and when officers approached them there was a strong smell of cannabis.
David Duff (39), of Galgorm Road, Ballymena, said he was “self-medicating for pain”.
A defence solicitor told the court the defendant, who is on benefits, had been “very honest” with police.
The court heard Duff had previously been in court and as a result of that matter had lost his place in a hostel in Derry/Londonderry and then moved to Ballymena.
At court Duff admitted possessing a Class B drug in relation to October 7 this year.
He was fined £100 and District Judge Nigel Broderick said he would not activate a suspended sentence.
