POLICE saw a man throw an item under a vehicle at Main Street in Portrush on the afternoon of July 24 this year and then discovered five grammes of herbal cannabis.

David Leighton (27), of Girona Court in Portrush, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court for sentencing for possessing a Class B drug.

He told police at the time it was for his own personal use.

Defence barrister Alan Stewart said the defendant had a record including a relevant conviction last September when he was given a suspended jail term.

The court heard the defendant had an IQ of 61 putting him in the bottom 0.5 per cent of the population.

Leighton had his suspended sentence from last year of two months increased to four months and it was suspended for 18 months.
