Prisoner was given cannabis to ‘help him cope in jail’

A PRISONER at Magilligan Jail caught with cannabis had been given the Class B drug during a visit by a family member who was “trying to assist him in coping with his environment”.

Brandon John Rainey (23), whose address was given as Magilligan Prison, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court via video link from the jail and pleaded guilty to possessing the drug.

A prosecutor said the incident happened on April 21 this year – Easter Sunday.

The other person was dealt with separately, the court heard.

A defence solicitor said the defendant had been in and out of custody since 2015 after receiving a two year sentence and a licence period of four years which meant he may not be eligible for release until 2021.

The lawyer said Rainey didn’t play any part in the planning of getting drugs which involved a “small quantity”.

He said the defendant was a “very isolated individual who suffers from anxiety” and the family member had been “trying to assist him in coping with his environment.”

Rainey was fined £150.
