Romanian man ‘paid friend with better English to arrange car insurance but policy was not set up’

A man caught driving without insurance in Ballymena claimed that because he did not have very good English he paid a friend with a better grasp of the language to arrange a policy and he was unaware it had not been set up.

Alin Lacatus (23), a Moy Park worker wirth an address at Hyndford Street in Belfast, was detected driving a Vauxhall Astra at 1.20am on July 6 last year at Linenhall Street in Ballymena.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday, the defendant, originally from Romania, pleaded guilty to being uninsured and he also admitted failing to produce a driving licence.

A defence lawyer said the defendant had a Romanian licence.

The defendant was banned from driving for six months; fined £300 and given a one year conditional discharge.
