Ballymena Court

A man put stolen items worth £380 into a holdall which he then placed above his head in a bid to avoid setting off an alarm as he left a Sports Direct shop, Ballymena Magistrates Court heard on Thursday.

Charles Andrew Law (28), originally from Ballymena but whose address was given as James Street in Ayr, is currently in Kilmarnock Prison serving a sentence with a release date of May next year for another matter.

The defendant appeared at Ballymena Court via video link from Kilmarnock, and admitted a theft charge relating to July 30 last year in County Antrim.

Two males were involved in the Sports Direct theft and although Law was identified on CCTV the stolen goods were not recovered.

Defence solicitor Andrew Kinney said Law was in jail in Scotland for “breaking and entering a commercial premises” for which he was given two years and nine months and had a release date in May next year.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said the defendant had a “horrendous” record and sentenced Law to six months in jail, suspended for two years, for the Sports Direct offence.
