Trip to caravan leads to man’s third drink driving related offence

A MAN caught for a third time for a drink driving related offence was detected on the latest occasion in Portstewart after being at a caravan on the north coast.

Stuart John McCourt (37), of Killutagh Avenue, Glenavy, was at Coleraine Magistrates Court today.

He admitted driving with excess alcohol in his breath at Station Road in Portstewart on December 4, 2019.

A prosecutor said police were alerted to a suspected drink driver at the wheel of a white BMW and when officers stopped the vehicle there was a smell of intoxicating liquor.

The defendant failed a preliminary breath test and at Coleraine Police Station blew a reading of 74 with the legal limit being 35.

A defence solicitor said the defendant had been at a caravan on the north coast and had four or five pints.

Deputy District Judge Brian Archer said it was a “very high reading”.

He said it was the third drink driving related offence but that the last one was outside the ten year period which avoided an automatic three year ban.

The defendant was banned from the road for 18 months and fined £250.
