Two men convicted at Ballymena Magistrates Court of benefit fraud

TWO men were convicted at Ballymena Magistrates Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Christopher Hibberd (32) of Circular Road, Larne, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £6,367 while failing to declare employment. He was sentenced to two months imprisonment suspended for two years and a compensation order was granted for £3,186.

Gareth Johnston (62) of Larne Road, Ballymena, claimed Employment & Support Allowance and Jobseeker’s Allowance totalling £4,362 while failing to declare he was in receipt of an occupational pension. He was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

The fraud was uncovered following investigations by the Department for Communities.

Suspected benefit fraud can be reported to the Department for Communities anonymously.
