A MAN caught using a Ford Transit van without insurance or MOT claimed he had been asked by a friend to help move furniture.

Robert Gerard Carey (47), of Ashbourne Manor, Ballymena, came to police attention at Woodcroft Brae on January 25 this year.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday, where the defence solicitor was Nigel McIlrath, the defendant pleaded guilty to the offences and also a driving licence offence.

The court heard the defendant had a “bad record” but nothing in the last eleven years.

He was banned from driving for three months and fined £325.
