A COURT has heard that after being awakened at 4.30am by her ex-partner a woman struggled to breathe when he put his fingers in her mouth.

The details emerged at Coleraine Magistrates Court where Liam Walker (38), of Greystone Crescent in Dervock, was ordered to do 100 hours of Community Service and was also put on Probation for a year.

He had previously been found guilty of assault after contesting the charge which related to April 14, 2018.

A prosecutor told the September 23 sitting of the court, the injured party was at home when she was awakened by her ex-partner at 4.30am and he was verbally abusive to her.

Downstairs, he then pushed her on to a sofa and stuck his fingers in her mouth causing her to struggle to breathe and he pushed his fist into her back.

A defence lawyer said Walker was aware of the impact the assault had on his former partner.

The court heard the defendant had not come to police attention since the incident.
