104mph speeder claims he was overtaking but other driver sped up

Ballymena Magistrates Court

A man caught doing 104mph on the Frosses Road near Cloughmills claimed he was attempting to overtake another vehicle before two lanes merged into one but the other driver sped up to try and prevent him from finishing the manoeuvre.

EamonMcGovern (30), of Lyngrove Hill in Glenavy, was caught speeding in May last year.
“In the heat of the moment,” said defence barrister Michael Smyth, the defendant had continued on and realises now he should have slowed down and pulled back in.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on January 24, District Judge Nigel Broderick said he had previously made his views known before about anyone doing such speeds.

The defendant, who was not in court, was banned from driving for a month and fined £300.
