An apprentice mechanic from Cloughmills caught doing 100mph in a Volkswagen Golf on the Frosses Road has been told by a judge: “You have to realise that speeds of this nature are very dangerous especially for a man who just passed your test in February 2016”.

District Judge Nigel Broderick was speaking at Ballymena Magistrates Court on November 29 when he banned Johnny Christopher Duffin (19), of Culcrum Road, from driving for a month and fined him £200.

The offence was detected on September 28 this year and at court the defendant pleaded guilty to exceeding the 70mph limit.

A defence lawyer said her client accepted he had acted “very irresponsibly” and wished to apologise to the court.
