Ballymena man ‘commits thefts in shops where he is well-known’

Ballymena Magistrates Court

A Ballymena man who commits theft offences in shops where he is “well-known” has been jailed for three months.

Nicky Millar (28), of Drumtara, stole a £2 bottle of wine from Sainsbury’s and also attempted to steal items from Poundland.

A prosecutor told Ballymena Magistrates Court it was believed the defendant was about to leave Poundland without paying for a full bag of goods and struggled with a staff member.

On another occasion at Poundland the defendant placed items in his jacket before running off but was caught. He was also in possession of a Xanax tablet.

Defence solicitor John McAtamney said his client had suffered with drug and alcohol addiction for most of his adult life.

He said they were mostly low-level thefts committed in shops where Millar, who had a record, is “well-known”.

Jailing Millar, District Judge Nigel Broderick said they were mainly low-level “but the number of them adds up”.
