A man with a Bendooragh address has been given a one month jail term for claiming over £13,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

Leonard Lyons (36) of Edenmore Crescent, claimed Job Seeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £13,525 while failing to declare employment.

He appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court via video link from prison on Monday June 4 and pleaded guilty.

He was given a one month prison sentence to run concurrently with an existing sentence.

The court heard he has a release date of June, 2019.

The £13,000 fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

In a press release, the department said the defendant is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
