A minute’s silence has been held at the monthly meeting of Mid & East Antrim Borough Council for former mayor the late Rev Dr Robert Coulter MBE.
Mayor, Councillor Lindsay Millar, said Mr Coulter, who had also been a North Antrim Assemblyman, had served the council for many years.
She said Mr Coulter had being involved in helping establish the new Castle Tower school in Ballymena.
She said it was a “lasting legacy” to Mr Coulter that Castle Tower “is the biggest special needs school in the UK”.
Last month In a statement, Castle Tower School said Dr Coulter had been the “much loved” Chair of the Board of Governors.
The school statement said: “Our whole school community mourns the loss of this remarkable man who had a huge heart for all of our young people and who dedicated himself to getting the very best provision for all of our pupils.
“Dr Coulter will always have a place at the heart of our school community and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
