A Cloughmills man who drove while disqualified and without insurance at Ballymena’s Larne Road on September 1 this year said he had gone to help his girlfriend whose vehicle had suffered a “blow out”.

Gareth Anthony Paul Maginn (31), of Mounthill Court, appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on December 6 and was banned from driving for six months and ordered to do 60 hours of unpaid work.

The court was told police saw an Audi car parked with Maginn at the wheel and he then reversed the vehicle back into a tyre company.

Defence solicitor Stewart Ballentine said his client was waiting for the garage to open but driving had been “a moment of madness”.
