A man who claimed he was just supplying drugs to his friends has been given a four months jail term, suspended for 18 months.

Michael Robinson (25), of Hazelwood Drive in Craigywarren, was at Ballymena Magistrates Court on February 7 to be sentenced for being concerned in the supply of cannabis; possessing the drug with intent to supply and possession of the Class B drug.

The drugs offences were detected in February last year.

Police attention was drawn to a car which had no number plate and a smell of cannabis was then detected.

Robinson told police at the scene it was 14 grammes and that it was for his own use as he used two grammes a day.

A mobile phone was seized which showed evidence of supply and the defendant then admitted supply but said it was only to friends to fund his own drug habit.

A defence solicitor said the drugs were for friends and that Robinson was not running a “business” that random people could contact for drugs.

District Judge Nigel Broderick told the defendant the offences could carry terms of imprisonment.
