Drugs were thrown from property during pre-Christmas raid in Portrush, court hears today

Coleraine Courthouse

Police raided a property in the run up to Christmas last year in Portrush and an item thrown outside by an occupant turned out to be drugs.
Sheldon Mullan (26), of Portmore Close, and Sean Quinn (26), of Skerrymor Place, admitted possessing cannabis on December 20 last year and obstructing the powers of search for drugs and at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 4 they were each fined £500.
A prosecutor said police carried out a search at Mullan’s address and after a tin containing cannabis resin was retrieved from outside Quinn said it was his and said he had “panicked”.
£580 worth of cannabis was then found in the “tree line” behind the address which Mullan said was his for personal use.
He told police he bought “in bulk because it is cheaper”.
Defence solicitor Ciaran Shiels said Quinn was addicted to cannabis “from an early age” but that his instructions were that his client is no longer a user.
The solicitor said Mullan, a self-employed mechanic/tyre fitter, had described himself as a “social” user of drugs.
Mr Shiels said it had been a “fairly robust” drugs search and a “door was put in”.
