Judge says he recognises man is battling addiction as he places him on Probation

A judge told a man he recognises he is battling addiction as he put him on Probation for a year.

District Judge Nigel Broderick was speaking at Ballymena Magistrates Court on October 4 where Michael Joseph Tougher (29), with an address at the Simon Community hostel in Henry Street, Ballymena.

The defendant admitted possessing Subutex on June 7 this year.

The defendant told police he had “bought” the tablets.

Defence barrister Neil Moore said 12 tablets were recovered from the defendant who is a “struggling” addict.

Judge Broderick told the defendant: “I recognise your struggle with drug addiction so in an effort to help you address that I’m minded to a Probation Order”.
