A Ballymena man who stole wine and a bottle of Captain Morgan’s with a combined value of nearly £40 from the Co-op in Ballymena last June has been given a three months jail term, suspended for a year.

Matthew Allison (35), of Parklands, appeared at the town’s Magistrates Court on February 7 and pleaded guilty to theft.

The theft was captured on CCTV.

A defence solicitor said the defendant was “no stranger to the court” but was “no longer in the grip of drugs” and the incident last June had been a “blip”.

District Judge Nigel Broderick noted the last directly relevant conviction was eight years ago.

He told Allison: “Hopefully this isn’t a return to your bad ways.”

If it was, the judge said, the defendant he would end up going to jail.
