A man who was previously given a four months jail term for possessing an offensive weapon – a machete – at New Street in Randalstown in the run up to Christmas in 2017, has, on appeal, had the sentence suspended for two years.

Jonathan Mawhinney (26), of Church View, Randalstown, was previously given the jail term in relation to three offences committed on December 17 last year.

As well as the machete offence he was disorderly and caused criminal damage to a police vehicle.

The appeal was at the County Court in Antrim on Monday.
