A man (73) on the road for 55 years with no convictions, was caught driving with excess alcohol in his breath at Coleraine’s Ballycastle Road in June this year.

Robert John McCollum, of Lisnablagh Road, had an alcohol/blood reading of 243 with the legal limit being 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Defence solicitor Sam Barr said his client “had no idea” why he had taken the vehicle out on the date in question.

District Judge Liam McNally said with the high reading it could have been an 18 months disqualification but he was reducing it to the minimum one year because of the long clear driving record.
