A man (58) with twelve disqualified driving convictions and who was banned from the road “for life” eighteen years ago was detected speeding at the wheel of a Land Rover Freelander.

Robert Getty, of The Commons, Broughshane, was caught doing 38mph in a 30mph zone at Ballymena Road, Cullybackey, in February this year.

He was uninsured and was a disqualified driver having been banned for life in 2000, Ballymena Magistrates Court heard on Thursday.

Defence barrister Stephen Law said the defendant took to the road “out of concern for his wife”.

Added the lawyer: “He received a call from his wife that she was taken ill at a friend’s house and he decided to go and collect her”.

Getty was using his wife’s vehicle.

Sentencing was adjourned to August 16.
