Man came to ‘attention of paramilitaries’ and when he left Belfast for Ballymena was then found with drugs in a Tupperware box

A man who, a court was told, “came to the attention of paramilitaries” and had to leave east Belfast, moved to Ballymena where he was caught with Tramadol and cannabis in a Tupperware box in a hostel.

Nigel Townsley (44), whose address was given as Linenhall Street in Ballymena, has admitting possessing drugs and was fined £400.

The offences were detected at the Lighthouse Hostel on September 14 this year.

A defence lawyer told Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday how his client came to leave Belfast.

Townsley appeared before the court via videolink from Maghaberry Prison.

The defendant also faces charges of robbing a woman of £60 cash and a mobile phone; assaulting the female occasioning her actual bodily harm and damaging the woman’s handbag on September 3 this year.

That case has been adjourned.
