POLICE received a call about a BMW being driven around the Tower Centre car park in Ballymena at 2am on December 23 last year and when officers attempted to stop the vehicle it drove off and a short time later the driver made off on foot.

Brian Maurice McCarte (39), whose address was given as Rowallane Drive in the town, had an alcohol/breath reading of 53. The legal limit is 35.

The defendant pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in his breath.

Ballymena Magistrates Court, on January 31, heard the defendant accepted his actions were foolish and he had apologised to police the next morning.

The defendant was banned from driving for a year and fined £300.
