A man with an address near Portrush is denying charges of assaulting a a man and making off without paying an £18.40 taxi fare.

Mark Jeffrey Brown (31), whose address was given as Skerryview in the Craigahulliar area but is now living in Scotland, is alleged to have committed the offences on November 3 this year.

A defence lawyer told the December 3 sitting of Coleraine Magistrates Court the defendant had been due to attend the previous week but didn’t make it from Scotland, where, he added, Brown is now resident.

The defendant was present in the dock at Monday’s Court and confirmed he understood the charges.

The lawyer said the charges were both to be contested.

District Judge Peter King adjourned the case and released the defendant on £500 bail with a condition that he is to have no contact directly or indirectly with the complainant.

The court heard the contest is likely to be held early in the New Year and the case was adjourned.
