A man smeared his faeces on the door of a police cell to “lash out against authority,” it was claimed in court.

Gerard Hugh O’Neill (27), of Abbeyglen Crescent, Newtownabbey, had pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to cell 15 at Antrim Police Station.

The incident happened on June 15 this year.

Thursday’s sitting of Ballymena Magistrates Court heard O’Neill was arrested for other matters and whilst in his cell he used a cell buzzer to request toilet roll.

The defendant then smeared his faeces on the cell door.

A prosecutor said the door had to be removed to be properly cleaned.

Defence barrister Neil Moore said the defendant had difficulties with substance abuse.

He said the defendant would often “lash out against authority” and the “repugnant” incident was one of those occasions.

District Judge Peter King said the offence merited a period in custody.

The case was adjourned until September 10.

The court heard O’Neill, who appeared via video link from Maghaberry Prison, had been jailed for eight months in recent weeks for other offences, details of which were not disclosed on Thursday.
