A man who told the PSNI he was an “Eskimo” has been fined £250 after pleading guilty to charges of assault on police and disorderly behaviour.
Clive McLaughlin (50), of the Simon Community hostel at Lodge Road in Coleraine, committed the offences at 6am on December 15 last year.
A prosecutor told Coleraine Magistrates Court police received a report of a disturbance at the hostel and the defendant swore at officers and made a number of remarks.
He pushed an officer against a wall and then said: “I’m an Eskimo”.
He continued to shout random and incoherent comments outside.
Defence solicitor Briege Martin said the defendant had been drinking heavily and had a limited recollection of what happened but he accepted his behaviour was inappropriate.
“This was something that would not have happened had he been sober,” she added.
