A Maghera man who allegedly ran out of a house in the middle of the night wearing only boxer shorts is accused of attempting to choke a woman with a belt during a domestic incident.
Daniel Joseph O’Kane (31), a plumber/heating engineer, of Sunnyside Park, Maghera, was remanded in custody when he appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on August 20.
He faces three charges relating to the early hours of August 19 – assaulting a woman; attempted choking of the woman and possessing a belt as an offensive weapon.
The court heard that at 4.24am police received a report of a male “beating” a female with a belt outside an address at Sunnyside Park.
Replying to a prosecution lawyer, a police officer said it was alleged the defendant, wearing only boxer shorts, chased the woman with a belt, struck her and wrapped it around her neck.
It was also alleged the woman had grabbed a dog lead on the way out of the house and struck the defendant with it in self-defence.
Defence barrister Francis Rafferty said although there were parts of the evening the defendant could not remember he denied putting the belt around the woman’s neck.
He said O’Kane received injuries.
Deputy District Judge Brian Archer refused bail and remanded the defendant in custody to appear back in court in mid-September.
