A man who stole flowers from Tesco in Coleraine left the store drinking from a bottle of Club Orange he also initially failed to pay for.

Stephen Lester Millen (35), of Lever Road in Portstewart, committed the theft in August last year.

Stolen items, which also included a red pepper, were worth £11.

The Magistrates Court in Coleraine, sitting on January 21, heard Millen paid for other items at a self-service area.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said the failure to pay for some of the items “may have been an innocent mistake”.

At court the defendant pleaded guilty to theft.

The court heard Millen had twenty previous convictions for theft but Mr Greene said they had been “tailing off” with the last conviction ten years ago.

When caught, Millen paid £1.18 on the spot for the Club Orange and said he was prepared to pay for the other items, Mr Greene said.

Millen was fined £150.
