A Romanian national working in Ballymena’s Moy Park factory told police he was aware his vehicle insurance had run out and he “just didn’t renew it,” prompting local judge Nigel Broderick to ban him from driving for two weeks.
Judge Broderick told Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday anyone who took a chance and didn’t renew their insurance had to expect consequences “otherwise there is no deterrent”.
Relu Constantin (48), of Waveney Road, Ballymena, was using a Ford Focus when the offence was detected at the town’s Larne Road Link on May 15 this year.
Defence solicitor Stewart Ballentine said the insurance had only expired a week before his client was stopped.
Judge Broderick said he would give credit for the defendant’s “honesty” with police and his clear record and banned him from the road for two weeks and fined him £300.
