A minute’s silence was held at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday morning in memory of press photographer Mark Jamieson who died at the weekend.

The photographer (60), from Coleraine, regularly covered the court as part of his varied workload.

Barrister Francis Rafferty, speaking on behalf of the legal profession, paid tribute to Mr Jamieson.

The lawyer said the photographer could often been seen at courts in Coleraine, Ballymena and Antrim.

Mr Rafferty said the public needed to see justice being done and as part of that the press “carry out an exceptionally important function” to let everyone, including victims of crime, see what has happened in court.

Added the barrister: “Mr Jamieson was a very important part of that local news machine. He fulfilled his duties on a daily and weekly basis and he will be sorely missed”.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers said they were “sentiments shared by the court” and she said it was appropriate to hold a minute’s silence.
