A man who had gone home in a taxi after being out with friends, had been watching TV and then, in a “moment of madness” according to a defence solicitor, decided to drive to a 24-hour garage.

Richard John Baird (28), of Old Park Avenue in Ballymena, came to police attention at 4.15am on October 26 last year and he had an alcohol in breath reading of 50 with the legal limit being 35.

He had a previous drink related conviction in 2009 and at Ballymena Magistrates Court on February 14 was banned from driving for three years and fined £300.
