A MOSSIDE man was over the limit when he crashed a van and caused damage to a hedgerow at Carncullagh Road, Dervock.
Raymond Nutt (39), of Knockmore Road, claimed he had been out to get a food takeaway, Coleraine Magistrates Court heard on December 31.
The defendant pleaded guilty to charges of driving with excess alcohol in his breath and failing to remain at the scene and report an accident on December 3, 2018.
A prosecutor said police received a report of a road traffic collision and that the driver had left the scene.
Police found the defendant in bed and his soaking wet clothing matched the description of that worn by a person at the scene of the crash.
The defendant had an alcohol/breath reading of 55 with the legal limit being 35.
Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said his client had gone out to get a fast food takeaway and had collided with a tree trunk which had been cut in a hedge.
The lawyer said his client left the vehicle because he didn’t believe it was blocking the road and it was his intention to get help the next morning.
The defendant was banned from driving for a year and fined £200.
