A pensioner has been charged with breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

Edward Gordon Bell Doyle (66), whose address was given as Glenshesk Drive, Ballymena, is alleged to have committed the offence between January 1, 2016, and August 2 this year in another part of Ballymena.

The charge says ‘being the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order without reasonable excuse accessed children, formed a relationship with a female and entered premises with children present, an act you were prohibited from performing under the said Order, contrary to Section 113(1)(a) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003’.

The defendant appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court via video link from Maghaberry Prison on Thursday. He could be seen using a walking aid.

A prosecutor said a file had been submitted by police to the Public Prosecution Service and the intention is to send the case to the Crown Court.

The case was adjourned until the end of September to fix a date for a Preliminary Enquiry – the legal step to move a case up to the higher court.

The defendant was further remanded in custody.
