Police spotted ‘first gear’ driver using mobile phone

POLICE spotted a driver looking down at a mobile phone which he was holding in front of his chest, Ballymena Magistrates Court heard on November 8.

Martin Campbell (31), of Ballyvaddy Road near Carnlough, was detected on September 8 this year at Croft Road in Carnlough.

Other motoring offences then came to light.

Defence solicitor Archie McCormick said his client had been travelling in first gear when he received a message and looked down.

The lawyer said the defendant didn’t use the vehicle very often.

The defendant was given six penalty points and fined £360.
