Snow and ice causing difficult driving conditions across County Antrim; schools closed

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 09:28 on Wednesday 23 January 2019, following reports of an RTC at Moyarget Road in Ballycastle. NIAS despatched a Rapid Response Vehicle to the scene. Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was transferred to Causeway Hospital.

THERE were difficult driving conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday as the first major snow of the winter hit the Ballymena area.

Ahead of rush hour on Tuesday the police were advising drivers to only take to the roads if necessary.

A lorry jack-knifed on Roguery Road near the Whitesides Road/Portglenone Road junction between Ballymena and Toome on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday there were reports of crashes in the Coleraine area and a road between the town and Limavady was closed for a period.

A runway at Belfast International Airport was closed due to heavy snow fall but re-opened later on Tuesday.

Some commuters said their journeys home on Tuesday took hours.

More snow fell overnight and on Wednesday there were school closures including Millquarter Primary School at Crosskeys, Carnalbanagh Primary School and Portglenone Primary School.
