A maintenance engineer caught driving with excess alcohol in his breath in Ballymena at 12.30am on Saturday October 27 this year was, according to his solicitor, “shocked to discover he was over the limit”.

Alistair Walker (27), of Park View in Ballymoney, had the offence detected at North Road in Ballymena.

A prosecutor told Ballymena Magistrates Court on November 22 the defendant had an alcohol in breath reading of 61 with the legal limit being 35.

Defence solicitor Nigel McIlrath said the defendant had a couple of pints earlier in the day and then another further pint and “was shocked to discover he was over the limit”.

The defendant was banned from driving for a year and fined £300.
