A special ‘fan zone’ has been created in Larne for hockey fans to watch Sunday afternoon’s World Cup hockey final featuring the town’s Ayeisha McFerran.

Larne Ladies Hockey Club are holding the event at Larne Lawn Tennis & Bowling Club.

The final against The Netherlands starts at 4.30pm.

Ireland beat Spain in a sudden-death shootout on Saturday.

Goalkeeper McFerran made three vital saves, before Gillian Pinder scored the final effort for a 3-2 win.

The tie had finished 1-1 in normal time after Anna O’Flanagan’s early goal was cancelled out by Alicia Magaz f.

The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, was one of the first to congratulate the team.

“As President of Ireland I wish to congratulate the Irish women’s hockey team and to thank them, on behalf of the people of Ireland, for their incredible achievements in the World Cup.

“The players, coach and support staff have overcome great difficulties, on and off the pitch, and have demonstrated what team spirit, skill and dedication can accomplish.

Political leaders praised the team.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar tweeted his support throughout the match and congratulated the team after their win.

DUP leader Arlene Foster called the team an inspiration.
