A man doing in excess of 90mph before being stopped by police at Dunsilly said he appreciated there was no excuse but that he was on his way home to allow his wife to get to a nightshift at a hospital.

Mark McAreavey (44), of Cliftonville Road in Belfast, appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on February 7 and admitted exceeding a 70mph speed limit.

The court heard that on October 13 last year police in an unmarked vehicle followed the defendant and their speedometer showed he was doing over 90mph.

The defendant was given three penalty points and fined £60.
