An 18-year-old Coleraine woman has been banned from driving after reaching six penalty points just a few months after passing her test.

Kristine Sarah Hewitt, of Grange Road, was caught using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving at the town’s Castlerock Road on October 29, 2018.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court on December 31 she admitted the offence.

The court heard the defendant only passed her test in June 2018 and already had received three points for excess speed.

The defendant told the court: “I just want to apologise”.

She had also written a letter explaining she was “still learning” and would be “devastated” by a driving ban.

Deputy District Judge Peter Magill said that as the defendant was still a probationary driver and had reached six points she could be banned from the road for six months.

However, he said he believed the defendant had “learned your lesson” and reduced the ban to two months along with a £60 fine.

The defendant told the judge: “Thank you”.
